Power drills have become one of the essential pieces of kit every budding DIY enthusiast must have, and particularly every professional. Even if you never get past putting up pictures, it is always easier with a decent piece of equipment. Drills have come one quite a lot since the Egyptians first invented them but strangely, the basic principles are still similar!
Power drills can be found corded or cordless. Both have their positive and negative points, but both can be used for simple and more advanced tasks. From tightening up screws to complete renovation projects power drills are something that will be a good investment.
Cordless power drills are not usually as powerful as the corded versions. There place is assured in the marketplace because you don’t have to be tied via an umbilical cord to the nearest power supply! Sometimes, there just isn’t one, and a cordless power drill is a necessity. Therefore, if you don’t tend to do a lot of DIY, then this may be the best option for you. However, going for the cheapest still may not a good idea as with the lower cost goes lower power, meaning the drill may not do the job you require properly.
The other downside is the weight and battery life. Cordless power drills have to carry bulky battery packs and the heavier they are, the longer the battery will last (you don’t want to be halfway through a job and the battery give up!). Therefore, look for one that comes with a spare battery. No doubt as technology advances, the batteries will become lighter and last longer – but again, that will be at a cost so watch out for battery life when you are make your choice.
With corded electrical power drills, of course the battery won’t run out. Just make sure you don’t drill into a power cable and short the whole circuit out though! Although a standard power drill will be adequate for most household tasks, if you are a real enthusiast or a professional, you may want something extra.
